SELF DEFENSE ![]() Self defense is one of the four components of taekwondo. Our self defense is a mixture of all kinds of techniques, which includes not only striking but also grappling / locks, take downs as well as defending against armed attackers etc. Self defense is something that cannot be practiced alone, and must be practiced with one or more partners in a safe setting. You will safely learn how to react (and how not to react), proper freeing techniques, locks and defensive techniques.

SPARRING
![]() Asia Pacific Taekwondo Academy practices the most world recognized forms which are the forms required for World Black Belt Certification by Kukkiwon which is the World Taekwondo Headquarters. Taekwondo Forms (Poomsae) is a practice which is devised to be performed in following the Liners of Movement in a systematic and consecutive way against an imaginary opponent or mulit-opponents by using various Taekwondo techniques of hand and foot. Practicing Taekwondo Forms improves strength control, balance control, breath control, eye control and concentration of spirit, as well as cultivating martial art spirit through its mental discipline. Asia Pacific Taekwondo Academy practices Olympic style sparring. Though taekwondo is an very effective martial art for street defense, Olympic style sparring (WTF) takes out the dangerous components of the martial art in order to make for a fun and dynamic sport that can be played by anyone with less worry of injury. This consists of the two players facing each other over a number of rounds (maximum of three). The sport is contact and so the players have to wear chest protector, helmets, shin guards, and arm guards. The rules allow kicks anywhere to the chest and sides of the body (but not below the belt) as well as punches are not allowed to the face.

BREAKING
Breaking is the destruction of wood, tiles and bricks using many parts of the body. There are different kinds of breaking, displaying accuracy, speed and power. Breaking is a very dynamic and exciting component of Taekwondo. As well as this breaking is symbolic of success for one must aim beyond the object in order to break it, much like one must focus on the goal and beyond in order to conquer their obstacles. Taekwondo is unique in that breaking is often required in order to pass a grading and obtain the next ran ![]()
